Resistance To Social Influence Flashcards
What is locus of control?
A person perception of personal control over their own behaviour
What is high internal locus of control?
Where a person believes they are in control of their life and it’s their decisions which affects them. Rely less on opinions
They are leaders and so less likely to conform or be obedient
Evaluation : Resistance to conformity
Allen and Levine (1971) found that conformity decrease when there was one dissenter in asch type study even decrease when dissenter wore thick glasses and spoke about their poor eyesight so this means when they have one person going against the norm the participant is also more likely to resist conformity
Evaluation resistance to obedience
Gamson et al (1982) on higher levels of resisting obedience than milligram .they proposed that was because of their participants in the group .(they had to provide evidence that could be used to help an oil company run a smeer campaign. )29 out of 33 groups rebel which is 88% when they were in groups as they had social support so they are more likely to resist obedience than when they are alone due to the fact they had no social support.
Evaluation research support locus of control
Holland 1967 replicated milligram study but also measured if participants an internal or external locus of control
He found that 63% of internals did continue to the highest shock
And he found that 77% externals did continue to the highest shock .
This is a strength because the 14% difference support that those who have a higher internal locus of control are less likely to confirm however this is a limited explanation as it doesn’t consider other factors as 14% isn’t that much of an increase or difference
Evaluation contradictory research
Twins at our 2004 analysed data from 40 years with American obedience studies from 1960 to 2002. The data showed that people have become more resistance to obedience but are also more external but people with a higher internal locus of control are more likely to resist.
People have become more internal due to our changing society, which means we are less likely to be obedient but we are also more external, because of factors such as social media have increased us being external and having a external look of control
