Conformity is the tendency to change what we do think or say in response to the influence of real or imagined pressure from others.

Where we act the same as the group because we share the same values and want to be accepted.The change only occurs to be part of the group and is often temporary

The strongest form of conformity
When a person conforms publicly and privately because they are internalised and have accepted the views of the group

Deutsch and Gerard (1955) who developed a two - process theory which proposes that there are two main reasons why people conform
What is normative social influence ?
To be normal like other people
so be liked by the majority we go along even if we disagree.
What is informational social influence?
to be normal like the other people
look for the majority group for information
If we don’t know what the right thing is we copy the majority to be right
