Why give Zakah?
An act of compassion
Wealth is a gift from allah and the unfair distribution is an opportunity for Muslims to show kindness
Not wrong to have wealth as long as Zakah purifies it
Where did Zakah come from?
Muhammed in medina after battles when widows and orphans needed help
How much is Zakah?
2.5% after necessities of life
What is khums?
The rule of one fifth
How did khums start?
Dividing up bounty of war
Give 1/5 to people in need or for society
Still followed by Shi’a Muslims
What is sadaqa?
Voluntary charity
Can be helping to build a mosque, wise advice or a smile
“Your smile for your brother is charity” prophet muhammed
What are the benefits of giving to charity?
Purifies your wealth and you of greed
Allah will give you shade on the plains of Arafat on DOJ
Protection from calamity, tragedy, misfortune. Better to give than receive
Riba- interest, a sin to charge interest and it’s good to wipe debts or extend the time
Sadaqa jariyah- perpetual charity, good that keeps on giving is good
What are liberationist views of charity?
Liberation theology is a combination of Christianity and Marxism
People can make a change for themselves rather than waiting for the afterlife
Muslims can make the ummah equal themselves through Zakah
What is nisab?
The minimum level of living before you are liable to Zakah
