Yr 12 Hypothalamus and Pituitary Flashcards
what two organs work together to control the body?
hypothalamus and pituitary gland
Why is the pituitary gland called the master gland?
It works with the hypothalamus to control functions of the body.
What system/s does the hypothalamus belong to?
nervous system and the endocrine system
What is a special function of the hypothalamus?
it links the nervous system and the endocrine system.
Where is the hypothalamus found?
The base of the brain, below the thalamus.
What gland is found below the hypothalamus?
the pituitary gland
What factors are secreted by the hypothalamus?
releasing and inhibiting factors
Releasing factor
stimulates ( increases) the secretion of hormones
Inhibiting Factor
slows the secretion of hormones
How do inhibiting or releasing factors get to the pituitary gland?
through the blood system to the anterior lobe
How to hormones get to the Posterior lobe of the Pituitary gland?
Hormones pass through nerves to the Pituitary gland where they are released.
What is the other name for Pituitary gland?
Hypophysis
Where is the Pituitary gland located in the body?
Under the hypothalamus.
Infundibulum
A stalk that connects the pituitary gland to the hypothalamus
How large is the Pituitary gland?
about pea sized - 13mm across.
How many lobes are in the pituitary gland?
Two
anterior and posterior
Do the lobes of the Pituitary gland work together?
what evidence is there for this?
No
The anterior lobe is connected by the blood stream
The posterior lobe is connected by nerves.
Why is the pituitary gland not a real gland?
It does not secrete hormones, it only stores and releases them.
Other name for the pituitary gland
adenohypophysis
What organ controls the Pit, gland?
The hypothalamus,
It releases inhibiting or releasing factors.
Gonadotropins
hormones that affect the gonads - ovaries and testes
gonad
ovary or testes. Organs that make sex cells.
Give 2 examples of gonadotropins
follicle- stimulating hormone (FSH) Luteinising hormone (LH)
What does FSH - follicle-stimulating hormone do?
stimulated the ovaries to produce follicles that contain eggs (ova) in the female
In the male it helps make sperm
What does the LH do?
In female, helps ovulation and corpus luteum.
In male. helps make sex hormones
Growth hormone, what does it do?
stimulates body growth, particularly the skeleton.
It increases the rate that amino acids are taken up by cells to make proteins,
Another name for growth hormone
somatotropin
What does thyroid stimulating hormone do?
TSH or thyrotropin stimulates production and release of hormones from the thyroid gland
Adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH)
Also adrenocorticotropin
Controls the production and release of hormones from the cortex of the adrenal glands.
Prolactin (PRL)
or lactogenic hormone.
Works with other hormones to initiate and maintain milk production in females.
