Pre-Classical yoga (1,000 - 500 BCE) - Upanishads
pick up where vedas left off, over 200 books, the upanishads contain practical wisdom regarding daily life.
Epic Period (500 BCE) - Bhagavad Gita
larger epic work regarding mythical and historical founding of India called the Mahabharata. Tells a story of the teacher Krishna and his young student Arjuna. Message of enduring hope through struggles.
Classical Period (200 CE) - Yoga Sutras
written/edited by Patanjali, represent the raja (roya) path. Sutra means “thread”. There are 195 sutras that are divided into 4 sections. 8 limbs of yoga
Hatha Yoga Pradipika (1300 CE)
1st yoga writing to codify the physical practice of yoga. Written by Svatmarama describes basic breath technique (pranayama), poses (asana), cleansing techniques (kriya), body locks (bandhas), and hand and body gestures (mudras)
Gheranda Samhita (1700 CE)
Introduces additional 25 poses and yoga concepts not found in Hatha Yoga Pradipika.
Shiva Smhita (1800 CE)
Discusses energy anatomy, mudras, pranayama and additional yoga poses
