Posterior
Situated or towards the BACK of the body. Also called dorsal.
Anterior
Situated at or towards the FRONT of the body. Also called ventral
Medial
Towards the MIDLINE of the body or organ.
Lateral
Towards the SIDE (outside) or located away from the middle.
Flexion
Decreases the angle between the bones (bending of the joint)
Extension
Increases the angle between the bones (straightens the joints)
Distal
Remote or AWAY from any point of origin of a structure.
Pr0ximal
Nearest or closer to any point of origin of a structure.
Superior
Situated above, toward the head.
Inferior
Situated below, or directed down, away from the head.
Hyperextension
The forceful or over extension of a limb or joint beyond its normal limits.
Abduction
Movement away from the body of midline (take away)
Adduction
Movement inward towards body (adding in)
Rotation
Movements made about the longitudinal axis and in the transverse plane.
Internal Rotation - rotating a joint towards the midline
External Rotation - rotating a joint away from the midline
Isometric
A muscular contraction in which length of muscle DOES NOT change
