Year 9 Respiration Flashcards
Where does aerobic and anaerobic happen ?
Mitochondria
What’s the chemical equation for aerobic respiration?
C6H1206 + 602 to 6CO2 + 6H20 + ATP
What’s the word equation for aerobic respiration?
Glucose + oxygen to carbon dioxide + water + energy
What’s the word equation for anaerobic respiration? (Animals)
Glucose -> lactic acid
What’s the word equation for anaerobic respiration? (Plants/yeast)
Glucose -> carbon dioxide + ethanol
Name 4 differences between aerobic and anaerobic respiration ?
- Aerobic uses oxygen = anaerobic doesn’t
-Aerobic breaks down all the glucose = anaerobic doesn’t
-Products
-Aerobic produces a lot of energy = anaerobic doesn’t
Why is there a higher breathing rate ?
More oxygen into the body = more oxygen into body cells = aerobic respiration releases more energy
Why’s there a higher heart rate ?
Increase in blood flow = more oxygen and glucose in to body cells for more energy released
What are the effects of mild exercise ?
-Breathing rate = supplies the body more oxygen to produce more energy for muscle contractions
-Heart rate = more oxygen and glucose in blood to muscles to produce more energy for muscle contractions
What are the effects of vigorous exercise ?
- Not enough oxygen = anaerobic respiration
- Anaerobic release less energy because glucose isn’t completely broken down
- Oxygen debt is created
-Lactic acid is transported to liver where it goes into glucose
What is oxygen debt ?
The amount of oxygen needed to break down lactic acid produced in anaerobic respiration
What is respiration ?
An exothermic reaction to produce energy
