What is a stressor?
Environmental change that can induce a stress response
A stressor generally arises when there’s an imbalance between perceived demand and ability to meet demand. What are some common stressors in sport?
Competition Conflict Frustration Climate Physical ability/ fitness (READ PAGE 144 IN BOOK 2)
What can high levels of stress and anxiety lead to within sporting performance?
Choking - the inability to perform
Which of these would be considered somatic stress management techniques? Biofeedback Goal setting Imagery Breathing control
Biofeedback and breathing control.
Although arguments could be made to suggest all cognitive techniques could assist with somatic stress.
What is the difference between cognitive and somatic?
Cognitive = psychological Somatic = physiological
What is positive thinking?
Method used to motivate/ ‘psych themselves up’….but it can also be used to control stress levels
What is negative thought stopping?
Process of blocking out negative thoughts and trying to focus on positive thinking
How might mental rehearsal aid a performer?
Remembering how to perform a skill and each key element to form a perfect execution. Can improve confidence as well as technique and reduction of stress.
