What is trait anxiety?
Someone possessing this has a predisposition to react to situations with apprehension
What is competitive trait anxiety?
Tendency to perceive competitive situations as threatening
What is the difference between cognitive and somatic anxiety?
Cognitive is the thoughts/ feelings of anxiety. Somatic are the physiological responses (e.g. sweaty hands)
Explain cue utilisation
This is where the athlete concentrates on cues that are relevant at the particular time, keeping the focus and not becoming distracted
What is the zone of optimal functioning?
An important state of well being and is the same as peak flow experience. (See pages 199-200 to find out how to achieve this)
What is the difference between aggression and assertion?
Aggression = intent to harm outside the rules. Assertion = forceful behaviour within the rules.
What theory of aggression would view aggression as being a natural response?
Instinct theory of aggression
Within the frustration-aggression hypothesis, if aggression within sport is successful what would be the outcome?
Catharsis = the release of frustration leading to a feeling of well-being
If aggression is punished within the frustration-aggression hypothesis, what would this lead to?
Directly back into frustration depicted earlier in the model
If someone witnesses a significant other being aggressive, they are more likely to be aggressive in the same situation. What theory of aggression might this be?
