Year 2 - Memory Models Flashcards
What does encoding mean?
Conversion of information in codes
How can we encode information received?
Visual codes
Auditory codes
Semantic codes
What are semantic codes?
Conversion of information according to meaning
What comes before the short term memory store in the basic memory model?
Short term sensory store
What is chunking and how does this assist with memory?
Different pieces of information grouped (chunked) together and remembered as one piece of information
What is selective attention?
Relevant information is filtered through into the short term memory with irrelevant information being lost or forgotten
What do we need to do with information before it can be transferred into the long term memory store?
Rehearsal - what you are doing now counts as rehearsal of course!
Where does selective attention take place?
Short term sensory store
How many pieces of information can be stored in the short term memory at a time?
Approximately 7
What is known as the working memory or workspace?
The short term memory
How long can the 7 pieces of information be held for in the short term memory?
Approximately 30 seconds
Explain the process of memory recall
Encoded information in the long term memory is retrieved by the short term memory in order to deal with the situation given (think of an example)
What is meant by the term memory trace?
When brain cells retain more information
What 3 things to Craik and Lockhart consider to have a positive impact on how much information can be remembered?
The information is;
- Considered
- Understood
- Has meaning/ can be related to past memories
