Year 2 - Biomech: Linear Motion Flashcards
Define linear motion
Movement of a body in a straight or curved line, where all parts move the same distance, in the same direction over the same time
Where is a direct force applied?
Through the centre of mass - this results in linear motion
Define displacement
The shortest straight line route from start to finish (different to distance!)
Define distance
The total length covered from start to finish
What is the calculation for speed?
Speed = distance / time taken
Define speed
Rate of change in distance
Define velocity
Rate of change in displacement
How do you calculate velocity?
Velocity = displacement / time taken
How do you calculate acceleration?
Acceleration = (final velocity - initial velocity) / time taken
OR
= (V2 - V1) / time taken
Define acceleration
Rate of change in velocity
What would a distance time graph look like for someone travelling at a constant speed?
A straight diagonal line indicates constant speed
How would you depict an athlete at rest in a distance time graph?
A straight horizontal line depicts no movement
What is the displacement of a 400m runner?
0m: they have finished where they started, therefore displacement is 0
What word would you use to define the following: a negative change in velocity
Deceleration
