Year 2 - Biomech: Angular Motion Flashcards
Define angular motion
Movement of a body or part of a body in a circular path about an axis
How is angular motion created?
Applying an eccentric force
Define eccentric force
Force applied outside the centre of mass
What is torque?
Measure of turning force applied to a body
Where does the frontal axis pass through the body?
Directly through the naval (stomach) from front to back
Where does the transverse axis pass?
Through the hips horizontally from left to right
Where does the longitudinal axis pass through the body?
From top to bottom, directly through the top of the head
About which axis does a dancer pirouette?
Longitudinal axis
About which axis does a gymnast rotate when performing a cartwheel?
Frontal axis
Which axis does a gymnast rotate about when performing a somersault?
Transverse axis
What is the unit of measure used for angular motion?
Radian (Rad)
1 radian = 57.3 degrees
2 pie radians = 360 degrees
What is the calculation for angular velocity?
Angular displacement / time taken (measured in rad/s)
Define angular velocity
The rate of change in angular displacement
What term would you use to explain the resistance of a body to change its state of angular motion or rotation
Moment of inertia (MI)
What equation would you use to calculate moment of inertia?
MI = sum of(distribution of the mass from the axis of rotation)
Measured in kgm2
