Define booting.
Allows OS to be loaded from initial start up.
What does the bios do?
A small program which is responsible for booting up a computer.
What is BIOS
Basic input output system
- Small program that runs before operating system kicks in
- stored in ROM
- basic hardware settings and instruction
- can be updated but rarely
- firm ware
What happens when you press the power button on computer?
- Sends hardware reset signal to CPU
- when CPU get the signal it get a jump command to the BIOS
- Once post been passed bios will initialise the computer internals peripherals checks in order of the “boot order”hardrive
- system boots up drive
- from master boot record the bios finds which drive has boot loader
What’s POST
Power on self test- checks if everything is where it should be
Once all checks done starts bios
What Does POST check for
BIOS not currupted
System chips are ok
Processor is ok
System memory ok
Keyboard present
Video display memory is ok
What are virtual machines
Using hardware to run software
