widespread desire to return to prewar economic prosperity, after 1912 impossible to restore what harding termed normalcy, millions of casualties loss of consumers, at end of war euro in debt to US, demanded payment of war debts, nations pursued selfish, nationalistic, economic aims, much infrastructure destroyed in war, R withdrew from Euro economic order, many newly created states had weak economies , boundaries separated raw materials from factories, US now major competitor with euro production, US and japan began to enter previously demanded overseas markets.
