Y8 - Separating Techniques Flashcards
What are mixtures?
Mixtures are combinations of elements or compounds which can be separated into single elements and compounds because they havent chemically bonded like compounds have.
Why might we want to separate mixtures?
To may sea water safe to drink by removing the salt or find which pen wrote a specific note.
What is the difference between a solution and solubility?
A solution is a liquid mixture like crude oil which can be separated whereas solubility is how much of a solid can dissolve in 100ml of water.
What is each separation technique?
Filtration is where you sift out smaller solids from larger solids, evaporation/distillation is where you heat a liquid into a gas to take out a solid or liquid with a higher boiling temperature and chromatography is where you make ink separate into the dye it was made of.
What can all the separation techniques be used for?
Filtration can be used to find metal in sand, evaporation/distillation can be used to make water pure and chromatography can be used to find who wrote specific notes.
How do you decide which separation technique to use?
You decide which separation technique to use by looking at basic aspects of the situation, for example are you separating small matter (like sand) from big matter (like a ring) then use filtration. Are you separating liquid from solid, then use evaporation or distillation etc.
