Y8 CHEM T1-Acids and Alkalis Flashcards
What is litmus?
An indicator that turns red in acids and blue in alkaline
What does the red cabbage indicate?
Red in acid purple when neutral and green in alkalise
What is number nine on the pH scale?
Weak alkali and it is greeny blue
What is four on the pH scale?
A weak acid and it’s orange/yellow
What is 12 on the pH scale?
It’s a strong alkaline and purple
What acid can be dangerous and corrosive?
Strong acid such as sulphuric and nitrate acid
How do alkalis feel?
Soapy
What does hydrochloric acid ,nitric acid and sulphuric acid make?
Hydrochloric acid makes chloride. Nitric acid makes nitrate. Sulphuric acid makes sulphate.
What will metal carbonate do?
Neutralise an acid
What is the general equation for metal carbonate and acids?
Acid+ metal carbonate➡️ salt+ carbon dioxide+ water
How can you test for carbon dioxide?
Using a lime water
What are metal oxides and hydroxide referred to as?
Bases and a soluble base is normally called alkali
What is the equation for neutralisation?
Acid+ base➡️ salt+ water
What is the metal and acid reaction?
Metal+ acid➡️ Salt+ hydrogen
How can you test for hydrogen?
Using the squeaky pop test
