What does the UN convention on the rights of the child state?
Children have the right to be protected from abuse or neglect by parents or carers
What is the purpose of the children’s charter?
Protect children and young people
What is GIRFEC?

What is in the wellbeing wheel?

What are the categories of abuse?

Name 6 indicators of possible abuse
Appearing afraid, quiet or withdrawn
Afraid to go home
Appearing constantly hungry, tired or untidy
Being left unattended or unsupervised
Having too much responsibility for their age
Acting in a sexually inappropriate way
Define physical abuse
Actual or attempted physical injury, including administration of toxic substances where there is knowledge or reasonable suspicion that the injury was inflicted or knowingly not prevented
Name 4 indicators of physical abuse
Delayed presentation Inconsistent history History inconsistent with findings Location of bruises Patterned/petechial bruising Clusters of bruises
Define physical neglect
When a child’s essential needs are not met
This is likely to cause impairment to physical health and development
Define non-organic failure to thrive
Failure to reach expected weight and growth norms or developmental milestones
Reversible with normal feeding
What are children with FTT more at risk of?
Childhood illness
Developmental and behavioural problems
Define sexual abuse
Any child below age of consent
Action/neglect to protect
Causes child to be involved in any activity which leads to sexual arousal/gratification of any other person (whether or not genital contact has taken place)
If the child initiates sexual behaviour and someone engages is it still sexual abuse?
Yes
Sexual abuse regardless of whether child initiates it or not
Define emotional abuse
Failure to provide for child’s basic emotional needs
What effects may emotional abuse have on children?
Serious long term effects on child’s behaviour and development
What is factitious or induced illness by proxy?
Illness in a child which is faked and/or produced by the parent or carer
How do you gain consent to examine a child?
Children Act 1995 says you need parental consent
How do you handle a disclosure?
Calmly
Don’t promise to keep a secret
Allow child to say what they want
Reassure them they have done the right thing
Explain you have to speak to someone who can help
Make a multiagency referral
Document
What happens after a multiagency referral?
Background checks
Joint police/social work investigation
Child may be interviewed by police & SW
Medical Ex of child
Care arrangements of child altered
Child protection case conference may need to be convened
May need name placed on child protection register
What are the 3 court orders you can use for child protection?

Child assessment order
What is a child protection order?
Sherriff authorises child’s removal to place of safety
What is an exclusion order?
Excludes perpetrator from household
What is a child assessment order?
Used if parent refuses to allow child to be seen and examined
What is a named person?
Someone who holds the records for the child and is a key contact in sharing concerns about a child
Who are the named people?
First 10 days - midwife
Until P1 - health visitor
Primary school - headmaster
Secondary school - guidance teacher
What is done if a child is seriously injured or killed?
