Xmas Deck Flashcards
Isotonic
When muscles change length as they contract. There are two types: concentric and eccentric.
Concentric
Muscles shorten as they contract.
Eccentric
Muscle lengthens as it contracts.
Isometric
When muscles stay the same length as they contract
Isometric
When muscles stay the same length as they contract
Features that assist with gaseous exchange
●Large surface area ●Moist thin walls ●Short distance for diffusion ●Vast number of capillaries ●Large blood supply ●Movement of gas from high concentration to low concentration
Inspiration
This is when we breathe in.
Expiration
This is when we breathe out.
Pathway of air
Mouth/ Nose - Trachea - Bronchi - Bronchioles - Alveoli
Diastole
The heart relaxes and blood fills the heart.
Systole
The heart contracts and blood is pumped out of the heart.
Stroke Volume (SV)
The volume of blood pumped out of the heart by each ventricle during one contraction (L).
Cardiac Output (CO)
The amount of blood ejected from the heart in one minute (L/min) or Stroke Volume (SV) x Heart Rate (HR).
Heart rate
The number of times the heart beats (BPM).
Synovial joint
An area of the body where two or more bones meet (articulate) to allow a range of movements.
