xerophytes and hydrophytes Flashcards
what are hydrophytes
live either partially or completely submerged in water
what are mesophytes
able to take up sufficient water to replace transpiration
what are xerophytes
plants that are adapted for them to survive hot, dry conditions
whta adaptations do plants have to prevent water loss
-waxy cuticle
-stomata on underside of leaf
-stomata closed at night
-decidous plants lose their leaves in winter
how does a waxy cuticle prevent water loss
due to evaporation through the epidermis as the waxy layer that covers the epidermis is thick
how does stomata on underside of leaf reduce water loss
reduces evaporation due to direct heating from the sun
how does stomata closed at night prevent water loss
no light for photosynthesis
how does leaf loss in winter prevent water loss
when the ground may be frozen (less water available) and temp may be too low for photosynthesis
why do plants have hairs and spikes
-traps a layer of still air between the hairs which increases the thickness of the uppermost layer
-this reduces the water vapour potential gradient
how does a sunken stomata effect the leaf
stomata sunken in pits create local humidity and decreases exposure to air currents and decreases water loss
