x rays Flashcards
what are x rays?
they are high frequency, short wave length electromagnetic waves
how are x rays transmitted?
they are transmitted healthy tissue but are absorbed by denser materials (bone and metal)
what are they used to make?
photographs of bone fractures and dental problems
what do brighter bits show in an x ray?
fewer x rays getting through - negative image
what are CCDs?
silicon chips (size of postage stamps) which are divided into millions of pixels
what do CCDs do?
they detect x rays and produce electronic signals to form high resolution images
what is computerised axial tomography used for?
they are used to produce high resolution images via both soft and hard tissue
how does tissue absorb x rays?
soft tissue absorbs small amounts of x ray, ct scans use a lot of x rays (more than normal)
why do radiographers wear lead aprons?
they wear lead aprons or stand behind a lead screen as it shields them as well as patients from radiation and keeps it to a minimum
