circular motion Flashcards
what is the centripetal force?
a resultant force on an object causing acceleration towards the centre of the circle
what does centripetal force depend on?
mass, speed and radius
what is the moment?
the turning effect of a force
what does using a larger force on an object do?
exerts a larger moment because the distance from the pivot is greater
how do u get the maximum moment?
need to push at a right angle to spanner
what does pushing at any other angle do?
produces a smaller moment because the perpendicular distance between the line of action and pivot is smaller
what is the centre of mass?
the point at which the whole mass seems to be concentrated
how do u know an object has reached its centre of mass?
it is freely suspended and swinging until centre of mass is directly below point of suspension
what happens if the anti clockwise moment is equal to clockwise moment?
the object won’t turn
what do levers make it easier to do?
work (lift an object)
why are levers known as force multipliers?
they increase the distance from the pivot at which force is applied - less force is needed to get same moment
what does the amount of force needed depend on?
the distance of the force at which force is applied from the pivot
how do pendulums work?
they suspend objects weight from a piece of string
what is time period?
time taken for pendulum to swing back and forth
what does time period depend on?
length (the longer the pendulum, the greater the time period)
