what is a magnetic field?
the region where a magnet (like iron and steel and also wires) carrying current experience a force acting on them
where do arrows point on field lines?
north to south pole
what happens when current flows?
magnetic field is created around wire
what is the field made up of?
concentric circles with wires in centre
what is the magnetic field inside coil like (solenoid)?
strong and uniform
what is it like outside?
like one round bar magnet
what happens if you stop the current?
it disappears and is also known as an electromagnet
what are the uses of a magnetic field?
- attract and pick up iron and steel
- some cranes (in scrap yards and steel works)
what can’t a normal magnet do that an electromagnet can?
it can pick it up but not drop it, EM can switch off and on (drop it and pick it up)
