WR1 - Face & Radiology Flashcards
What makes muscles in the face different from other muscles in terms of position?
Facial muscles lie in the superficial fascia - more superficial
How do facial muscles differ from other muscles in terms of attachment?
Facial muscles attach to skin or other muscles
Normal muscles attach to bone
Identify the muscles
What are the parts of the Orbicularis oculi?
What cranial nerve’s branches innervates all muscles of facial expression?
Facial nerve (CN VII)
Which foramen of the skull does the facial nerve pass through to emerge onto the face?
Stylomastoid foramen
What two bony points exist either side of the stylomastoid foramen?
Styloid process & mastoid process
Identify these branches of the facial nerve
What are the borders of the parotid gland?
Note - Borders also include External auditory meatus (posteriorly) & The angle of the mandible (inferiorly) but not shown in diagram
describe the course of the parotid duct
PDuct runs anteriorly, superficial to the Masseter and then pierces the Buccinator
After piercing the buccinator, the duct enters the oral cavity opposite the 2nd maxillary (upper) molar
What structures pass through the parotid gland?
Facial nerve CN VII
External carotid artery
Retromandibular vein
What nerves innervate the Parotid gland?
Great auricular nerve - General sensory
Glossopharyngeal nerve CN IX - Parasympathetic
Sympathetic nerves via Cervical ganglia
What nerve gives sensory innervation to the face?
Branches of the Trigeminal nerve
- Opthalmic nerve CN V1
- Maxillary nerve CN V2
- Mandibular nerve CN V3
Arteries supply the face arise from the ______ carotid artery, which splits into the _______ and ______ arteries
External carotid artery splits into the:
- Facial artery
- Superficial temporal artery
