6 causes of The First World War

A

Alliances - many countries had alliances and this meant if they went to war their allies would help
Military Rivalry - Germany was competing with Britain for the best navy they were trying t9 build a ship called “dreadnought”
Nationalism - The belief that your country is superior and could do what you wanted. Love for your country
Empires- Britain, France and Germany all had empires Britains was the largest and Germany’s the smallest. But they all wanted more land
Family Rivalries - The three main Kings in Europe were all grandchildren of Queen Victoria, George of England, Nicholas of Russia and Wilhelm of Germany
Assassination - The Serbian group of the Black hand gang Killed Franz Ferdinand

The assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand and steps to war

A

He was in Sarajevo ,Bosnia. The black hang gang who were Serbian wanted to kill him. Their leader was kabronovich. As they wanted to recreate greater serbia. The first assassination attempt failed as the assassin forgot about the timer on the bomb.
Gavrilo Principe got a sandwich and the driver took a wrong turn and ended up in front of principe and Principe shot the arch dukes wife in the stomach (she was pregnant ) and he shot Franz in the neck.
July 23rd Austrian gov gave Serbian gov an ultimatum after finding out that serbia supplied black hand gangs weapons
July 25th - serbia accepts all points apart from one allowing Austrian police in serbia
July 28th - Austria p- Hungry declares war on Serbia
July 30th - Russian army mobilised
August 1st - Germany declares war on Russia
August 3rd - Germany declares war on France and attacks Belgium
August 4th - Britain declares war on Germany for attacking Belgium

Ways in which men were encouraged to join the war

A

Lord Kitchener did a campaign where he featured in propaganda calling for men aged between 19 and 30 to go fight
Alfred léete , Frank Brangwyn and Norman Lindsay were jusat a atew of the artists that designed propaganda
Propaganda focussed on guilt, women and children and atrocities of the Germans
Pals battalions - going to fight with friends
Conscription was introduced - go to war or to prison
White feathers - conscientious objectors
Suffragettes did a demonstration encouraging men to go

Treaty of Versailles main points

A

Germany to accept full responsibility for WW1- war guilt clause article 231
Germany had to pay £6.6 billion to the allies
Germany had to give 70,000km2 to the allies e.g aslance-corraine was returned to france. Aim to make Germany weaker
Germany has to hand over it’s colonies
Only allowed 15,000 men and 6 battleships in navy
Rhineland to be occupied by allied troops
No union between austria and Germany
Conscription banned
Not allowed submarines armoured vehicles or air crafts
Army reduced to 100,000 men

How did the treaty lead to WW2

A

Allowed hitler to move up the ranks politically using the germans rage against them to drive them toward another war. As the germans thought the treaty was draining the life from their country and that they had been done an injustice and shouldn’t be blamed completely for the war
