Why was slavery started?
1) People thought god approved of slavery
2) People thought black people were like horses or dogs and that white people were superior
3) People thought that slavery made the africans happier
4) There was lots of money in slavery as slaves could be sold for $1200
5) People believed black people were less intelligent like children and needed telling what to do
6) The bible talked about slavery so people thought this meant it was ok
Slave auctions
1) Couples fetched a high price as you would be investing in more slaves as they would have children
2) They would also cover up scares from whipping as this would mean that they were rebellious and no one wanted a rebellious slave
3) The slaves were brought up onto a stage where white people would gather around, the slave auctioneer would big them up and make them sound better than they were
4) White people would inspect the slaves teeth and this was a good indicator of whether slaves were healthy or not
5) Slaves were sold along side farming equipment as to white people black people were just another tool at their disposal
Abolition
1) main reasons why slavery was abolished - inhumane and against religious teachings
2) David walker - father slave, mother slave , he was free , involved with abolition movement and the freedoms journal
3) Anthony benzet he was a quaker , writer and abolitionist, set up a school class for poor black children
4) Wlliam Lloyd garrison - made his own anti- slavery newspaper , formed the new england anti - slavery society
5) Frederick Douglas - was born a slave and escaped , wrote three biographies about his time as a slave
Life on plantations
1) The slaves would work long shifts from sun up till sun down
2) The strong men would clear the land and plant new crops and the women and children would do the weeding and watering
3) The slaves had a minimum amount of work that had to be done by the end of there work shift
4) Slaves may be punished some of the punishments included branding and being hung up by a hook through a single rib
5) slaves lived in poor conditions in small wooden shacks with dirt floors
6) Slaves were often malnourished due to their diet this combined with bad living conditions meant many died young
Slave resistance
1) Nat turner - led the bloodiest slave rebellion on 21st August 1831
6) he led 80 slaves in revolt, it lasted two days many white people and slaves died and the slaves that survived were executed
They killed 50 white people
2) Harriet Tubman - escaped slave , leader of underground rail road which helped slaves escape to canada. With the help of some white people
8) they used secret codes so that the slave owners did not know what was going on some of it was embedded in songs
3) Dred scott case - took his case to the supreme courts after his master died. Supreme court said he was still a slave. This was in north america
5)many other slaves took their cases to court
4) other slaves resisted by using their tools so hard in the field that they broke
7) some slaves also pretended to go mad
9) some slaves tried poisoning their masters and committing arson
The trade triangle
1) Three passages- outward, middle and homeward ( perspective of england)
2) England gave africa gun and other industrial goods such as cloth
3) Africa gave america and the west indies slaves for their plantations
4) America and the west indies gave england luxury good such as cotton, rum , sugar and rice.
5) middle passage was the longest
The middle passage
1) Slaves were extremely cramped and no room to move
2) The workers on the ship forced slaves to dance for exercise and their entertainment if they didn’t dance enough they would be whipped
3) The slaves were in filth and squalor and lots became ill they were thrown overboard to prevent spreading
4) The slaves were often in shackles that were rusted, they were big and uncomfortable and if the slaves moved around they would likely cut themselves
5) They had the bare minimum needed to survive and the captain thought they should be grateful for this
