what has been codified?
standard english - (its rules written up in grammar books and dictionaries), it can be used for a wide variety of purposes and it is promoted in a country’s education system. It has high status within its culture but is spoken by a minority.
crystals opinion on WSE?
Crystal believes there isn’t such a thing as a World Standard English currently.
There isn’t enough uniform agreement on spelling, lexis, grammar for this to be so.
Identity is too big a factor: nations want to preserve their own variety.
The current ‘growth spurt’ of English is comparatively recent, so hard to predict what might happen going forward.
