Linguistic relativity – language matters because it does affect how we think – Sapir-Whorf Hypothesis

Need to change to avoid offence – not politically correct – English needs to reflect diverse society we live in

Words reflect a white/upper-class view of the world that is dated

Words carry unpleasant histories CONNOTATION that users may be ignorant to

A

Words are just words! Attitudes are what matters. Addressing the language is a waste of time.

Pinker ‘euphemism treadmill’ – even if we change these words, those words will also be insults eventually

Impossible to alter language – ban a word – regulating language notoriously destined for failure

Everyone is offended by something…..

PC gone mad’ – we’re all a bit too sensitive about these things….

Nothing wrong with the words as such, just the context of use (by whom especially) – some of these words used by the community themselves (reclaimed?)

what are some reclaimed words?

A

“n*****” – use in rap music and amongst some cultures
“pak1” – t-shirt label range created in 2004
“yid” – used by Tottenham fans to proudly state their support of club – but actually it’s historically an insulting word for ‘Jewish’
