Zero hours contract
Understood to be a contract between an employer and a worker where:
The employer is not obliged to provide any minimum working hours.
The worker is not obliged to accept any work offered.
Remote working
This involves allowing the employees to work away from the business premises.
Employee participation
Employees have the ability to participate in the decision making process at work.
Work councils
A formal meeting of managers and employee representations to discuss pay and working conditions and to negotiate on issues such as changes in working practises.
Term-time working
Where working hours mirror time-term days.
Time off in lieu
The paid time off work for having additional hours.
Job sharing
Some employees sharing jobs on a morning-afternoon basis.
Compressed hours
To provide an alternative working week in terms of the no. Of days per week actually worked by employees.
Annualised hours
Where employees work a total number of hours for the year as a whole, with a degree of flexibility as to how these hours are taken.
Workforce planning
Workforce is about deciding how many and what types of workers are required.
Business aims
Long term, overall goals of business.
Business objectives
Stated, measurable targets, of how to achieve business aims.
Eg Enter into overseas market within 3 years.
HR objective
An objective set by the HR department to help achieve the objective or aim. Eg design and implement training programme regarding cultural differences.
