Barriers to effective communication by Shannon and Weaver
1) Technical
The ability of the receiver to receive the information being communicated.
2) Semantic
This relates to the receiver’s ability to understand what is being sent.
3) Effectiveness
Whether the information being communicated has been acted upon in an effective manner.
Jargon
Expressions used by a group/profession that are difficult to understand.
MEDIA
The way the communication is transmitted, eg texts.
METHODS
Formal and informal.
Verbal and Non-verbal.
Group norms
Rules or guidelines that reflect expectations of how group members should interact and act.
Implicit norms
Whether a group is new or not, its norms aren’t always discussed. People may accept norms by “unspoken consent”.
Eg facing forward in a crowded elevator of strangers.
Explicit norms
If norms are stated outright, either orally or in writing, then they’re explicit norms. Eg work uniform.
Individual objectives
Are set for a single employee. Eg a slow based programmer may be set a time based target.
