Motivation
A strong desire to act in a particular way and to achieve a certain result. (The will to work).
Morale
Refers to ‘spirit’. If morale in an individual, group or team is high then there exists a spirit of confidence, purpose etc.
Monetary methods of motivation
Include commission, profit sharing, bonus payment and piece rates. All mathematical.
Non monetary methods of motivation
Are all non-mathematical. Include job enrichment, team work, praise and fear.
Commission
Payment made to employees based on value of sales achieved.
Profit sharing
When employees receive a proportion of business profits.
Bonus payment
Usually made to employees in addition to their base salary as part of their wages.
Piece rate
When the employee gets paid for each item produced.
Fear
A short-term strategy, a non-monetary method, which may not even work, as it can scare employees, leading to long-term employees wanting to leave.
Praise
Leads to staff feeling valued and wanted in a job, with high motivation. Also shows that they are recognised for doing something.
Job enrichment
Being given extra responsibility.
Employer/employee relations
The relationship between management and employees.
The 2010 equality act
Legally protects people from discrimination in the workplace and in wider society.
