Q

Why was the theory created?

A

-They believed memory was not just one store( unitary) but many stores.

Q

What does this WMM focus on?

Q

What does the theory state the LTM is?

A

A more passive store that holds previously learned material for use by the STM when needed.

Q

What is the phonological loop and its capacity?

A

-Deals with acoustic information and preserves word order.
-Has a limited capacity.
-One of the slave systems

Q

What are the two systems in the phonological loop and their job?

A

-Articulacy loop- voices information you are rehearsing as an inner voice.
-Primary acoustic store-holds memory of sounds.

Q

What is the visuospacial sketchpad and its capacity?

A

-One of the slave systems.
-Holds visual information.
-Helps with recall of images from the LTM.
-Has a limited capacity.

Q

What is the central executive?

A

-Manages the 2 slave systems
-No capacity as it doesn’t handle memories.
-Allocates memories to the slave systems.
-It has non-specific modality.
-Controls attention.

Q

What is the episodic buffer?

A

-Another slave system (added later).
-Deals with specific type of information.
-Has a limited capacity.
-Added later as a more general store as it was unable to explain research findings before.
-Back up storage to other slave systems.
-Connects LTM and STM.

Q

How can the working model of memory be useful for understanding dementia.

A

-Central executive controls attention and dementia patients struggle to focus on one activity and control their attention.
-can therefore spot the symptoms of dementia and give early treatment

Q

How is the WMM useful for understanding dyslexic?

A

-People with dyslexia struggle with sounds and hearing words showing their phonological loop is damaged but no anything else such as the visuospaticial sketch pad.

Q

Why might MSM be a better theory than WMM?

A

-Has a better explanation of long term memory.
-included the sensory register, STM and LTM so is a more complete explanation of memory.

Q

Why might WMM be useful for education?

A

-can inform revision practices such as not listening to music while reading through notes.

Q

What was Parkins study and how does it conflict WMM?

A

-conducted a brain scan looking for evidence of the CE but did not find any areas of activity when doing CE activity.
-no empirical evidence of CE, if CE does not exist neither can any of the slave systems so reduces credibility of model.

Q

What was the KF case study and how does it support WMM?

A

-was in a motorcycle accident and damaged his STM but had vision impairments but the phonological loop was fine.
-shows different stores within the STM.
-As vision is controlled by VSSP and phonological loop controls acoustics and sound.

17
Q

What is Williams syndrome and how is WMM useful for understanding it/ support it?

A

-individuals with WS have normal language ability but difficulties with spatial and vision.
-shows different stores in the STM.
-as vision is controlled by VSSP which is damaged but PL is down which controls their language ability.

18
Q

What is a problem of using the KF case study to support WMM?

A

Case studies only test one person behaviour so it is a very unrepresentative sample and therefore the results will be ungeneralisable.
