Baddeley (Classic Study) Flashcards
What was the aim of Baddeley’s study?
To investigate the influence of acoustic and semantic word similarity on learning and recall in STM and LTM.
What was the sample in the study?
-72 participants both male and female.
-all from the applied psychology research unit.
What research design did baddeley use?
Independent measures
How many word lists were there and what were they?
-4 lists
-semantically similar, semantically dissimilar, acoustically similar, acoustically dissimilar.
What happened before the testing?
All participants had a hearing test.
How many seconds was each word shown for?
3 seconds
What happened after each word list was shown?
They pots completed 6 tasks involving digits and then had to write down the words in order(repeated 4 times).
What happened after the 4th trial?
Ppts were given a 15 minute distracted task involving copying numbers and then they did a surprise recall.
What were the results from the study?
-acoustically similar words were recalled worse than acoustically dissimilar.
-semantically similar words were recalled better than semantically similar words.
What was the conclusion from the study?
STM is encoded acoustically, LTM is encoded semantically.
How is the study generalisable?
Includes both genders so sample is very representative.
Why is the study not generalisable?
All participants are from applied psychology research unit so they may have shared characteristics.
Why is the study reliable?
Is a lab experiment so it is highly standardised/controlled so can be easily repeated to test for reliability.
How is the study valid?
-Lab experiment is highly controlled so less EV’s.
-uses independent measures so reduces the chance of order effects.
How is the study not valid?
It is a lab experiment so it has low ecological validity and mundane realism (artificial environment so limits applications).
