working memory model Flashcards
Name components
Central executive
Phonological loop
Visual spatial sketchpad
Episodic buffer
Central executive
Acts as a filter. Processes information in all sensory forms and directs to other slave systems. Limited capacity and can only deal with one piece of info at a time
Phonological loop
Deals with auditory info
Phonological store stores words we hear, inner ear
Articulatory process allows repetition of info in phonological loop inner voice.
Visual spatial sketch pad or inner eye
Handles non phonological info
Visual cache stores visual material about form or colour
Inner scribe
Episodic buffer
Limited capacity store of info from central executive phonological loop and visual spatial sketch pad
Evaluation
Pet scans indicate different brain areas are activated during verbal and visual tasks supporting separate stores :)
evidence supports it kosslyn (boat), a good theory is one that can be tested :)
ance dual task performance :)
Little known about central executive :(
Concerns itself with just stm not a complete explanation. :(
Many findings support wmm come from lab experiments lack realism :(
evidence from brain damaged patients may be unreliable as they’re individual cases:(
KF memory for visual info was unaffected but memory for verbal info was impaired. supports wmm not msm
kosslyn and schwatrz
ps were asked to memorize a drawing of a boat. they wee slower at correctly answering questions about the front of the boat when the question followed from one about the back. this shows how we use our visual ability to remember certain aspects of objects.
