Working Memory Model Flashcards

1
Q

WMM

A

This model is a development of the multi-store model. It argues that STM is not a single store, rather compromising of subcomponents such as:

  • Central Executive
  • Phonological Loop
  • Visuospatial sketchpad
  • Episodic buffer

Q

WMM Central Executive

A

Acts as the system supervising and coordinating all other subcomponents in the STM.

Q

WMM Visuospatial Sketchpad

A

Handles visual and spatial information. Essential for tasks like navigation and object visualization.

Q

WMM Episodic Buffer

A

Temporarily holds several sources of information at the same time and presents the particular sources you need in your situation.

Q

What does WMM say about multi tasking? Provide an example about what you’re talking about as well

A

WMM argues that we can multi task are long as we are utilizing different short-term memory subcomponents. However, when we try to do something that uses the same STM subcomponent, it becomes difficult. An example of this is articulatory suppression which is when we repeat a certain word whilst trying to memorize information. Both use our phonological rehearsal system leading to an overload and decrease in accuracy of recall of the information.
