Working Memory Model Flashcards
What’s the working Memory Model
A representation of STM processing different information using subunits controlled by central control.
Who made the wmm and when
Baddeley and Hitch
1974
What’s the Central Executive
Component that coordinates activities of the 3 subsystems
What’s the component that processes visual and spatial information
Visuo-Spatial Sketch Pad
What’s the episodic buffer
Bring together materials from other subsystems to bridge Working Memory and LTM.
What’s the phonological loop
Where written and spoken language is processed by sound.
What’s the two systems in the phonological loop.
Phonological store
Articulatory Control System
What are the capacity, encoding and reason for central executive
Responsible for decisions
Limited capacity
Modality free
What are the capacity, encoding and reason for Phonological loop
Acoustically coded
2 second Capacity
Storing acoustic information
What are the capacity, encoding and reason for The visuo-spatial Sketchpad
Visual encoding
3-4 object capacity
Storing visual information
What are the capacity, encoding and reason for the episodic buffer
4 chunk limited capacity
Modality free
Brings all information together
What is the KF case Study
Performed in 1970 where a test was done on someone with brain damage on STM was tested showing better recall when read acoustically himself than when someone else read to him acoustically.
His LTM is intake by STM is damaged.
explain why the KF study relates to this case along with strengths and weaknesses
Shows there’s more STM stores then MM model as stm is remembered better in different ways. Along with this shows that there’s more than one path to LTM as LTM can be intake while STM is fine.
Shows damage to phonological loop
-Deterministic
- unclear cause and effect
- cant generalise to others as case study
- Unclear if other cognitive impairments affected memory
- Internal Volatility
What’s the dual task performance A03 for WMM
Test where 2 tasks are performed at once with either one visual and one verbal task or two of the same.
Found when performing the same type of task performance declined than different task.
What this means is that as its more difficult to remember two of the same tasks than two different there has to be more than one store for STM (acoustic and visual)
advantage;
lab setting so scientifically valid and controlled
Supports WMM and visuo-special sketchpad
-internal volatility
-applicable in real life settings (school)
Disadvantage;
Lab setting so artificial
Student participants so may have better memory
Explain the lack of clarity Argument
Central executive is vague and has lack of explanation despite being the most important component (Baddeley agreed)
Shows WMM isn’t fully developed
Episodic buffer was added to model later in 2006 despite its release in 1974.
Undermines model as low internal volatility
More temporal validity as developed over time.
