Working Memeory Model Flashcards
Who suggests the working memory model and what does it look at
Baddely and Hitch
- only looks at STM (live memory)
Why has it been made and what are the parts
Baddely and hitch argue MSM is too simplistic and STM is not a unitary store but had 4 parts
- central executive (CE)
- viso-spatial sketchpad (VSS)
- phonological loop (PL)
- the episodic buffer (EB)
What is the central executive
Supervisor - decides where info goes
Everything that comes into your live memory is picked up by CE and sent to the appropriate sub-systems
-process info from 5 senses
- gives us ability to focus on certain things
- limited capacity
What is the phonological loop
Inner ear deals with auditory and language info
- allows for sub vocal repetition (articulatory - inner voice)
Coding- language and auditory info
Capacity- Limited
What is the viso-spatial sketchpad
Inner eye
Process all visual and spatial info eg thinking about route to school
-allows us to visualise things
-gives us spatial awareness
- limited capacity
What is the episodic buffer
Added in the 2000s cause WMM was criticised that it didn’t include LTM
- bridge between STM and LTM
- coding - visual, 5 senses and acoustically (all 3)
- limited capacity
Sub-systems
Can’t use one sub-system to do two tasks as they only have limited capacity
Eg can’t read while speaking (phonological loop)
-if two tasks use two different sub-systems should be possible to perform both tasks
Baddely- Dual task
Can’t use two sub-components at the same time as they have limited capacity
But you can use to different components
Working memory model support
Case study KM
-brain damage from a motor bike accident
-he had impaired speech (phonological loop) but no damage to imagery (viso-spatial sketch pad)
-digit span was only 2
-shows evidence for different types of stm and that it is not a unitary store.
