Q

Sensory memory -

A

From environmental stimuli via 5 senses
- brian decides what you’re going to pay attention too anything it doesn’t pay attention too is lost
Duration- 1-2 secs
Capacity- large
Coding- 5 senses

Q

Short term memory

A

-if nothing is done with the info eg written down it will be forgotten
- live memory - sub-vocal repatition in your head
Coding - acoustically (sound)
Duration- 30 secs
Capacity - 5-9 items

Q

Long term memory

A

If info from STM is rehearsed it will go to LTM.
- to make neural pathways solid info has to be rehearsed
Capacity - unlimited
Duration- forever
Coding- somantically (understanding)

Q

What does capacity, duration and coding mean

A

capacity - how much info the store can retain
duration. - how long Info is stored for
Coding- form in which the memory is retained

Q

Study - capacity of STM

A

jacobs
- digit span technique
-given string of digits to recall until they can’t recall anymore
-average 5-9 - supports capacity of STM

Millers magic 7
- 7+-2. (5-9)
-capacity can be increased by ‘chunking numbers together’ eg phone number

Q

Study- Duration of STM

A

Peterson and Peterson
Triagram (string of 3 letters)
-asked to recall triagram after counting down from a random number in 3’s to prevent rehearsal. - counting got longer each time
-the longer the counting the harder it was to recall

3secs- 80% recall
18secs- less then 10% recall

Q

Study- Coding of STM

A

Baddely
- group one- acoustically similar words eg bat hat
-grouo two- acoustically dissimilar - eg house bar
Then asked to recall in the same order
- did worse with acoustically similar words cause they got muddled.
-supprts STM being coded acoustically

Q

Study- Duration of LMT

A

Bahrick
-aeound 400 pp
Asked people to put names to faces in their year book
- 15 years after graduating - 90% accurate
- 48 years - 70%
- showing LMT can be anything up to a lifetime

Q

Study- coding for LTM

A

Baddely
- group one- semantically similar words (big, large)
-group two- semantically dissimilar words (tree, glove)
Group 2 did better cause group one got muddled shows it’s coded semntically.
