What is a working class professional?

trained hard and demonstrated a win at all costs

How did the WC professionals emerge?
came from poor background
low status
had to make money from sport or could not afford to play
Winning become the most important thing. The impact on behaviour of individual within sport due to this:
- Foul play increased within sporting contests
- ‘Gamesmanship’ were used to try and gain an advantage and increase chances of winning
- Challenges to refereeing decisions became increasingly common as ‘professionalism’ set in
How would they win a bet to make money?
They might ‘throw’ a fight or a footballer might lose a game on purpose to win a bet and make money
Why did they take part in specialist training?
Early professionals in walking and running races were paid according to results. To ensure they were the best they took part in specialised training.
