What were the middle class?
emerged as result of urbanisation + industrialisation
self made individuals
people below aristocracy but above working class
made money during revolution - factory owners, local gov, doctors
weren’t upper class as weren’t born into money therefore they had empathy, concern for working class
How did the middle class support codification?
public school and university old boys played a key role in formation of many NGB of sport
Their administration experience allowed them to control sport and become organisers to form and run clubs and NGBs
How did the middle class support competitions?
created leagues and competitions
did this through:
- public schools
- universities
- factory teams
- church teams
- clubs
- NGBs
How did the middle class support public provision?
development of public facilities
e.g. parks and public baths via the middle class
provided by middle class in various positions in society
- philanthropist
- factory owners
How did the middle class support increase leisure time?
as middle-class factory owners, gradually gave workers more leisure time e.g. Saturday half day
This gave workers more time to participate in sport or spectate
How did the middle class support move to professionalism?
the middle class helped in development of early commercial/ professional sport
did this by:
acting as agents
promoters/patrons in athletics
factory teams
‘broken time’ payments in football
