What is an NGB?
A national governing body is an organism that governs and administers a sport on a national basis
What do they do?
Control and regulate the environment of its sport
Administer the practice and participation of its sport
Develop its sport
Why were NGBs developed in the mid-late 19th century?
Sport was becoming increasingly popular with more widespread playing of sport
more teams / clubs playing
more national and international fixtures were being organised
leagues and competitions were required for teams to compete
nationally agreed rules and codification for different sports for fair competition
Why would some sports prevent professionals from competing in their sport?
due to desire of upper/middle class to maintain control of sport
to pressure amateur ideals in sport
to maintain exclusivity - middle and upper classes didn’t want to mix with the working class
they did not like losing to working class professionals
What factors affected the formation of NGBs
Maintenance of control of sport among upper/middle classes
more leagues/ fixtures required
more clubs
maintain amateur ideal
threats of professionalism
different public schools played different versions
rules/codification required
