Who is responsible for conducting Pre-Use and After-Use checks on Working at Height equipment?
The user is responsible for conducting both pre-use and after use checks on working at height PPE.
Who is responsible for conducting 6 Monthly inspections on Working at Height PPE?
All personnel engaged in 6 monthly maintenance are to be Gen Tech GSE (or Army, Navy or civilian equivalent) and authorised as a competent person i.a.w AP 400A-0004 Leaflet 1309.
If during an inspection a defect is found, what procedures should be taken?
- Withdraw equipment from use IMMEDIATELY
- Label equipment UNSERVICEABLE using appropriate service form.
- Return equipment to GEF/REME/stores.
- New equipment will need to be ordered and registered as a replacement.

When marking an ID on Working at Height PPE, where should and shouldn’t it be marked?
It SHOULD NOT be marked on Structural parts of the webbing or rope components.
It SHOULD be marked on the local label provided for that purpose, or the plastic membrane that typically covers the main equipment label if the local label is not present.
Under what circumstances are metal components to be etched with serial numbers?
Under no circumstances are the metal components of 23C/4240 99 WaH equipment to be etched.
What is the maximum shelf and service life of items of Working at Height PPE?
All webbing and rope (textile) components have a maximum ‘In-Use’ life of 5 years on condition and a maximum ’Total’ life of 10 years from date of manufacture.
How long in terms of service life would a harness that has been on a shelf for 6 years have left?
It would have an “In-Use” life of 4 years left.
After the shelf and service life of Working at Height equipment has lapsed, what should happen to the equipment?
WaH PPE must be withdrawn from use when these limitations have been met.
If Working at Height PPE has been subjected to a fall, what actions should be taken?
It is to be taken out of service immediately.
