What is the purpose of HASAWA 1974?
To provide the legislative framework to promote,
stimulate and encourage high standards of Health
& Safety at work.
To protect the public against risks to Health and
Safety from work activities.
What are employers responsibilities?
It shall be the duty of every employer to ensure, so far as is reasonably practicable, the Health, Safety and Welfare at work of all his/her employees.
What are employees responsibilities?
It shall be the duty of every employee, to take reasonable care for the Health and Safety of his/herself and other persons who may be effected by their acts or omissions whilst at work.
Define the term “Reasonably Practicable”
Reasonably Practicable can be defined as weighing up the
quantum of risk, against the financial cost, effort and time to manage
that risk.
Who should you approach in the first instance for Health and Safety matters?
All Health and Safety issues are normally to be raised in the first instance by Service Personnel or Civilians with their immediate Supervisor or Line Manager.
This may then be brought to the attention of the Unit
Health & Safety Officer.

What are the Employers responsibilities with regards to providing First Aid at work?
An employer shall provide, or ensure that there are provided, such equipment and facilities as are adequate and appropriate in the circumstances for enabling first-aid to be rendered to his employees if they are injured or become ill at work.

What form is used to document accidents and near misses in the RAF?
Reportable accidents and near misses are recorded on a RAF Form 7454.
The form is electronic and can be found within the RAF area of DefNet.
Accident records are required to be retained for a minimum of 3 years.
What three notices can the HSE issue to the MOD?
Issue improvement and prohibition notices and can bring prosecutions against any person contravening a relevant statutory provision.
Who is responsible for the implementation of Health and Safety at Station Level?
CO is responsible for setting unit policy.
Everyone is responsible for the implementation of H&S.
