Portable Ladders Flashcards
What is the purpose of a Portable Ladder?
A ladder is used to afford a means of access, egress and support for personnel.
What inspections are required on a Portable Ladder?
- Pre-Use
- After Use
- 12 Monthly
What Management System are Portable Ladders registered on?
They should be registered on GSE engineering management system - Joint Asset Management Engineering System (JAMES).
State the possible defects that could be found on a Wooden Ladder?
- Rot and Decay
- Warped Stiles
- Loose and Worn Rungs
- Cracks and Splintering
- Excessive wear and tear on head and feet of stiles
- Corroded and loose metal parts
State why a wooden ladder should not be painted?
Wooden ladders are NOT to be painted as this has the potential for covering potential defects to the ladder system. However, a protective, transparent and non-conductive finish is recommended.
Who is responsible for conducting 12 monthly inspections on Portable ladders?
Supported ladders are normally subject to a 12 monthly examination by TG5 IAW DAP 119A-1102-5F.
State the possible defects that could be found on Metal Ladders?
Possible Defects on Metal Ladders;
- Twisting and Distortion.
- Corrosion.
- Loose rivets, screws or hinges.
- Excessive Wear and Tear.
- Stile feet missing or loose.
State where metal ladders should not be used?
Metal ladders must not be used where an electrical hazard exists.
What is the correct ratio a ladder should be positioned at?
The ladder should be at the correct angle. At a ratio of 4:1 or approximately 75º.
What is the minimum overhang of a portable ladder?
Minimum overhang for extension ladders is dependent upon closed ladder length IAW DAP 119A-1102-5F. Ladders up to 5m,1.5m rungs overlap.
State how ladders should be stored?
Ladders are to be stored:
- In dry, airy conditions
- Away from direct sunlight
- In such a way as to minimise warping, bending and distortion. (Supported at both ends and, in the case of long ladders, in the centre).
How many points of contact should the user maintain while using a portable ladder?
Always maintain three points of contact with the ladder system.
If defects are found during the inspection of a portable ladder, what process should be conducted?
If defects are found during pre-use or after use inspections, the ladder system should be quarantined, labelled accordingly and measures put into place to stop the use of the ladder system.
Explain how portable ladders can be secured?
- Secure at the base, using a rope tied off to a picket or stake or use a purpose-built footing tie.
- Secure at the top using a length of rope; make sure you tie off to both stiles and not the rungs.
