Work experience/Volunteering Flashcards
How your hobbies and extra curriculum relate to medicine
Over past 10 years I have been doing voluntary work as a translator- where I interpret and fill out forms for asylum seekers and refugees. I have developed my communication skills through interaction with a variety of different people with different backgrounds. Will help me in med as I will be able to build rapports with different patients which would help patient to fully open up allowing me to provide the best possible care.
What experiences have you had to see priorities in healthcare? **
During work experience in paediatrics at st georges- during ward round consultant assessed patients needs based on the severity of their condition to deliver timely and appropriate care. Showed the prioritisation of urgent and life threatening cases
- During epsom work experience- cardiology ward, doctor prioritised urgent life threatening elderly women, recognised unstable condition and acted immediately in order for the best outcome for patient
Describe a time when you have managed multiple priorities and the management strategies you have developed from it? **
- During semester 2 exams, my mum underwent a rotator cuff surgery and I helped care for her, whilst also continuing to interpret and translate for asylum seekers.
- Going through this, I developed ways to manage stress, by taking walks to the park and doing breathing exercises; and prioritise tasks in order of importance.
- Being able to handle multiple priorities and also keeping stress to a minimum will help me during medical school because I would have to..
And will also help when I am a doctor because there is a high workload, and I would need to continue to keep patient care as my number 1 priority and provide the best quality of care, ensuring a positive outcome for patient.
