Ethical scenarios Flashcards
Patient doesn’t want covid vaccine and has been researching about it **
Will structure my answer on 4 pillars of medical ethics
First consider duty as a doctor- which is to fully inform patient with the evidence based practice of vaccine, as well as the risks of not taking it both for themselves and community. Unprotected from serious infection.
- Autonomy is important in this scenario because the patient has a right to make an informed decision and the dr must respect this. (However it is important to make sure patient is competent). Clearly communicate to patient simple terms without medical jargon, make sure they understand.
- Beneficence- dr must do good and act in best interests of patient
Non- maleficence- ties in with beneficence- most beneficial thing is vaccine, however this may cause more harm than good if against patient wishes.
- Justice- there could be consequences to wider society- spread to vulnerable people
Ultimately it is important to approach scenario with empathy and understanding.
Whatever the patients final decision is dr must continue to provide the best care in the patients best interests. I would adhere to the GMCs guidelines.
(Important for me to fully check if patient is exempt from vaccines
Saw this on WEX- measles

Ethics questions structure
- Discuss both arguments for and arguments against using the framework of the 4 pillars of medical ethics
- Autonomy- Does it show respect for the patient and their right to make decisions?
- Non-maleficence- Does it harm the patient?
- Justice- Are there consequences in the wider community?
- Beneficence- Does it benefit the patient?
