Research Flashcards
Something that has impacted public health in the last 10 years
AI
What is it: alphafold is an ai system that detects the 3D structure of proteins.
Understanding 3D folding is important- proteins need to fold into specific shapes to function correctly in body
Impact on patient
- Alphafold identify- diseases alzheimers and cystic fibrosis develop at molecular level.
- This knowledge could speed up the development of new more effective drugs and treatment, leading to quicker – accurate better patient outcomes
Impact on dr
- Provides deeper insights into mbd- enhancing ability to understand complex conditions.
- Helps in development of personalised medicine- treatments tailored to individual patients- more effective and targeted therapies
Importance
- Drs can use the most recent scientific knowledge in order to provide best possible care for patients
- Drs can analyse information from research and use their clinical judgement to make it relevant to individual patients situations.
ISP- critically analysed different ways in which the endocannabinoid system can be targeted in order to treat obesity- learnt how scientific discoveries translate into practical applications that directly benefit patients.
Conclusion
By exploring the risks and benefits of therapies, I learned the importance of personalised medicine. Understanding that each patient responds differently to treatments highlighted the need for patient centred care.

Medical imaging
I will discuss what medical imaging is, 3 impacts it has had on medicine and then the importance of such breakthroughs on medicine as a whole.
What is medical imaging- techniques used to visualise inside the body to see where a problem is.
There were many beneficial impacts that medical imaging had on healthcare
- It greatly improved speed and accuracy of diagnosis- particularly useful for detecting metastatic cancer to see where it has spread- especially given 1 in 2 people in the UK are affected by cancer in some way
- Also improved safety of diagnosis- no longer invasive
- Improved screening techniques- Due to ultrasound theres been great progress in pregnancy testing. This means that treatment plans can be put in place before a child is born.
Research is very important for medicine- it helps fight problematic diseases in new, more effective ways. It also improves our diagnosis techniques. It also provides options to patients within their treatment and so makes treatment more personalised to what they find comfortable.
As a doctor you must keep up to date with new research in order to provide high quality care to patients.
Recent article you have read about
I recently read in the Lancet - Lymph nodes being transformed into mini livers

Use the latest evidence- based practices to patient care
1st CT scan
1st CT taken in Atkinson Morley wing in st georges- which is really exciting
