Work Done (T4) Flashcards
1
Q
In physics what do we mean when we use the term work?
A
Work is defined as the energy transferred in a given situation.
Work is done whenever energy changes from one form to another.
Work is measured in joules.
2
Q
Give four examples of work being done..
A
- a lightbulb works by converting electrical energy into light and heat
- you will do work if you push a car because the car gains kinetic energy and friction will heat up the wheel bearings and tyres once you reach a steady speed
- your car brakes do work when they slow you down because they convert kinetic energy into heat
- lifting a heavy weight off the ground involves work because the weight is gaining gravitational potential energy
3
Q
What is the equation for calculation work done?
A
W = F x d
W = work done in joules F = force in Newtons d = distance moved in metres
