WORK /Average human spends 4,130 days 590 week 1/3 of life at work Flashcards
Potential hazard types in the work environment include:
Biological, ergonomic, psychological exposures
JOB STRAIN:
Karasek’s job strain model (1979) explains that: a high strain job is where there is high demand, but the worker has little discretionary power to control that demand (ie. low control)
JOB STRESSORS:
structural and environmental (condition hot cold, posture)
• Career concern
• Confusion over job roles: not being sure about what your responsibility is.
• Stressful interpersonal relationships: when people do not want to listen
• Management style: not being support by management
• Job features and design: long working hours.
Job stress is cause by two main factors:
• High demand and pressure at work
• Low latitude, decision- making, power, or control in meeting those demands
JOB STRESS:
identifies as a risk factor for the development of several conditions, namely CVD and depression
• Stressors (are usually dealt with through OH & S interventions) versus stress itself (more complex todeal with – often multiple factors involved)
• Bad news for organisations: increased sickness,
lower productivity, higher worker’s compensation
• Psychosocial versus physical
Systems-based approaches to reducing stress
• Fostering a culture of workplace support and providing solutions.
• Specific discussions related to workload or workload conflict, rather than ‘stress’
. • Collective efforts seen to be more helpful to create change than individual efforts (workload, pressure, bullying).
• Challenges to this model are individual contract arrangements which tend to undermine a sense of belonging
The individual approach to occupational stress has been heavily criticised for blaming the victim.
