wordy shipmates 2 Flashcards
william and winthrop controversy
Before banishment said that no civil had the right to enforce religion or religious practices
Main problem: Accuses Winthrop by saying that the church is insufficiently committed to the worship of God, this put him at odds with the colony’s leaders.
(williams had the same beliefs as them, but thought there should be religious freedom)
Roger William background
- wanted church and gov ideas to be separate
- Believed that men should have freedom to follow their conscience in religious (he was going against the church)
- Fled the church of england and went to America to find freedom of belief and worship
- Winthrop hailed him as “a godly minister” of the Boston Church
- Williams declined because he wanted religious freedom
Roger William’s banishment from MA
- MA’s leaders thought that the state needed to prevent error in the church and therefore must be connected, believed the success of MA depended on it
- Williams wanted freedom of religion
- Winthrop summoned Williams to court to explain his “dangerous opinions” and gave him an ultimatum that unless Williams recants by the next court he will be banished
Big Idea:
Colony leaders- forced worship
Williams- religious freedom
Roger Williams establishment in Rhode Island
- Williams had originally settled in land he had purchased but it turned out to be on plymouth’s boundaries so he was forced to move across the river (during winter)
- R Island was outside of the MA charter, so when he landed, he was greeted by a local Narragansett.
- “It was neither price nor money that could have purchased RI… RI was purchased by love” no religious obedience was required.
- different from MA because real religious freedom was there, not just religious toleration for Puritans
Pequot war
Englishmen and NA’s wanted control of trade in Connecticut. very violent
Reasons for Native Americans to join MA
enemy of my enemy is my friend, mohegan and narragansett hated the pequot (who allied with the english)
why the war was so violent
english were ruthless and had more advanced tech
Pequot war aftermath
- changed how the colonists see the native americans forever
- saw them as worthless and that they could be take over easily
- justified it with the bible
- indians were pushed out of their land and the pequot were eliminated
Anne hutchinson
- similar to Williams bc she was also banned for religious reasons
- wanted a separation btwn gov hierarchy and religion
- accused ministers of preaching a covenant of works (saying that good behavior is going to save their souls but it won’t)
How Anne Hutchinson changed the idea of American Puritanism
changed the idea of predestination:
- pushed it toward evolving into a new, more personal stage.
- thought you didn’t have to rely on church and gov. more democratic
- her immigration policy of 1637 said that no one outside of the puritan mindset was allowed in
- her idea became popular quickly, people started listening to her, joined her prayer group, and listened to her preach
Anne Hutchinson- banishment
- called her a witch
- Winthrop kept telling her why she’s wrong
- She told winthrop that she could hear God and Jesus and the anti-christ what to do and preach
- accused of being a witch
