Act and Potency
Aristotle’s pair. Beings are a mixture of potential of change and what they actually are right now. The only exception is God. He is perfect therefore He does not change. He is pure act.
Active and Passive intellect
- 2 aspects of the mind.
- passive intellect = takes things out of the world and you receive it in your mind
- active intellect = understanding the thing and what it can become
Anchorite/Anchoresse
Person that removes herself from society and lives a religious life devoted to God. Dead to the world. (hermit)
Anthropocentrism
idea that humans are at the center of all things. Everything in the world is organized around humans and all creations are for humans.
Antinomianism
Heretical view. “anti-law”. once you are justified by faith and God has offered you salvation, the law does jot apply to you anymore. you can do things without consequences.
Arianism
heretical view of the Trinity. suggests that there is only one God (the Father) and he is the creator of all things. His first creations were the Son and Holy Spirit.
Asceticism
self-denial done to separate yourself from your bodily desires and to purify the soul. ex: starving yourself
Atonement
reconciliation with the divine being (God) that is achieved through Christ. unification.
Blasphemy
any speech or action that shows a lack of respect for the divine. ex: swearing
Christendom
kingdom/territory ruled by Christianity.
Christology
branch of theology that deals with the study of Christ’s dual nature (fully human and fully divine.
Consubstantial
things that share the same substance. ex: 3 person of the Trinity since they are all made of God (substance)
cosmopolitanism
cosmos = univers. poli = politics. idea that the world is one big political community. (seeing the world as one)
Demonstration
from Aristotle’s philosophy. syllogism that gives scientific knowledge. you start from the necessary and self-evident principles to identify the causes of other things
Ems necessarium
“necessary being” God is the necessary being. everything else in the world is contingent (could be either true or false), but God must be true and exist.
Essence VS Existence
- essence = nature of something. what is means to be a dog for example.
- existence = wether this thing exists or not.
- according to Aquinas, for God, they are inseparable
Filioque
“from the Son”. controversy: does the spirit comes from the son and father, or only the father??
- Western = both
- Eastern = only Father
Final cause
the function, the purpose that explains the nature of something. ex: for a chair, sitting
Godhead
divine essence. the name for the 3 manifestations of the divine. the father, son, spirit are unified in the godhead.
Haecceity
“thisness”. determining factor that makes an individual what it is.
Hair Shirt
ascetic instrument used to self-deny, to purposely hurt yourself. used to separate yourself from pleasure.
Holymorphism
Aristotle’s view that substance is composed of 2 parts: matter and activity.
Imitatio dei
“imitation of God”. requirement to imitation the divine and Christ in our way of living
Intellectual substance
beings that are not composed of matter and form. ex: angels
Intercession
prayers that ask for assistance or intervention on somebody. Asking for God’s help.
Limbo
outer edge of hell. place where people like Socrates go where they are not saved not tortured
